Why is Aunt Alexandria still around?

Aunt Alexandria is probably staying with the Finch's to try and preserve their family reputation, since Atticus is "ruining" it with the Tom Robinson case. She is also probably trying to influence the kids so that they won't grow up to do the same. Why is Atticus still putting up with her? Why is he keeping her around? Is he overwhelmed with the task of being a single father and going to court with such a serious case? Aunt Alexandria repeatedly undermines the way Atticus is raising the kids, and expresses her views on how wrong he was to take the Tom Robinson case. She might be helping with keeping the kids under control, but it seems to me she is doing more harm than good.

Maybe, in a weird way, she is needed.

Also, what happened to her family? Are they just being ignored.

I think her being around and being so strict on the kids makes them just more rebellious? maybe just a little?...

daydream...i think her and her husband might have been having a few problems? i'm just taking a guess.

Yeah, they never seemed to have a very close relationship

It is his older sister, he probably doesn't want to risk her wrath.

And as for her own family, Francis is in school, and her husband is busy managing their land. Aunt Alexandra is probably doing more good helping her brother than her own family.

I don't think Atticus is keeping her around just to keep the peace. He has no problem with contradicting her when he thinks she's wrong.

I do think that Atticus has too much on his plate and needs her help.

But isn't that why they have Calpurnia?

I always thought Calpurnia was there for the more practical aspects of life, she is basically a servant. Aunt Alexandra is there maybe to introduce Scout to society?

She probably came on her own because she is the one who is having trouble at home.

It does seem like she is imposing, like Atticus never invited her. She probably did come on her own, but I don't think it has much to do with her life at home

yeah that is what i think. that she is imposing on their lives. and i really do want to know where her family is in all of this? i bet they are having problems.

or maybe she is there in case anything was to happen while atticus was taking this case, for example that night where the Cunninghams were going to the jail, you know something would of happened if it wasnt for scout, so maybe alexandria is there for that. but i believe she might be overstaying her welcome. i mean she tends to cause situations to become blow out of proportion just because she believes atticus is doing a bad job at being a father..
