Mayella

Mayella Ewell is not one of the brightest charcters in the book. Nor is she one of the most beloved. But, I find myself feeling pity for her throughout her questioning. Anyone else getting this from her?

I think she is quite strange. Because she will be falling apart one moment and then totally ready to tear the lawyers apart.

I am not sure what to think about her. She is not bright but is forced to do what her father says or be beaten. So i guess i feel some pity for her

I feel no pity for someone whould lie to get a man killed to cover up her social fauxpas.

She has lived a hard life and hasn't been shown much kindness

Still it doesn't make up for slandering a good innocent man just because she felt promiscuous.

I agree with lonelywolf. She has to lie because her father wants something from him.

I don't care. She is nineteen. If she wanted to she could leave.

I like your word choice bookworm! And I totally agree

Remember the time period that we are talking about and don't forget the Scottsboro Boys. There is this idea that "white womanhood" is to be protected at all costs. Mayella is a victim of her own shame and ignorance and the ignorance of the culture at the time; though she knows she is lying, she surely fears the repercussions of admitting to her lusting after Tom Robinson.

You used the word promiscuois!!! my new best friend!! HaHaHa! But yes i know but I realize that She might not be wanting to actually get him killed she was simply scared. Who knows though. Maybe she is an unworthy candidate for the pity. Or maybe it was just pathos!! (my literary element) haha

I feel really sorry for Mayella. She has no friends, which Atticus inadvertly proves during her questioning. And in my opinion, the only reason that she is lying is so that her father won't beat her up again. She really does try, think of her red geraniums lined up outside their shack.

She made TOM get her the geraniums! I feel her pain for being hit. I really do, and society sucks, but what she is doing is murder.

okay. Agree to disagree?

Deal.

I dont really feel bad for her because she has an attitude with everyone. she doesnt have to be mean when she answers the questions.

i think this is a bitter sweet subject on her pity, i feel pity for her because she has been thretened and hasn't lived a good life at all, and it's been very rough for her, but at the same time this shows that when people aren't treated right they will end up forcing it upon others, whether its when you become a parent, or like mayella is risking this man's life for her cover up. so i do feel sympathy for her but at the same time she is taking it out on others now

I agree with Lonelywolf about
her being forced to lie. But
I wish people could realize
that when someone threatens you
they are really prolly not
going to do anything...especially
if you tell an athority!

samoanlove said...

I feel horrible for her. Her confidence is low and any act of kindess may booste that up

Lonelywolf10 said...

authority? there is no authority for the Ewells. And the person threatening is Mayellas father. He will beat her he backs up his threats. Mayella's father will beat Mayella if she doesnt do what he tells her.

bookworm said...

But look at what happened to Tom because of his kindness. He gets sentenced to death.

Benzley said...

i know but if she told the
court that her father was
beating her he would go striaght
to jail or prison. I would
probably not have the chance to
beat her anymore...that's how
i would deal with that situation.

Lonelywolf10 said...

Yes but you have to remember Mayella is not that bright. That would be a great solutiont eh problem however she didn't think of that.

But, you have to realize that even if she told, she would have to deal with all of the consequences such as her siblings and what would happen once her father got out of prison, if he even got sent there.

samoanlove said...

Will you refrase that lonelywolf. i dont get what you said ?

But she still could have left Tom out of it. It should have stayed within the family to fix that situation. If Mayella's father was beting her, then the family should have interceeded.

Benzley said...

maybe her family doesn't know
about him beating mayella all
the time? or maybe he threatens
them as well?

Lonelywolf10 said...

Or mayby they think they can't stand up to someone as big as their father.

Benzley said...

Probably so...

i think shes acting like this because she doesnt know how to be around people. shes never had to go to school, never had to make friends, and never had to be around lots of people. she doesnt know how to handle all the attention. shes only had her father who doesnt treat her right any ways, so thats already a bad relationship and she never had a mother. shes just stuck there with all those little kids that she has to take care of because her father's to drunk to do anything about it.

bookworm said...

You have a point duck lips.

Duck Lips said...

pretty much!!

Benzley said...

it's kinda weird that she has
younger syblings and that would
have to mean that her mom was
alive till that time atleast?

Duck Lips said...

yeah but probably not long enough to teach her her life lessons

Sokoudjou said...

I wonder what happened to her mother?
