Fire!

Do you think the fire was significant? How did it start? Was it purposeful or an accident? When Scout and Jem ask Miss Maudie, she says "Probably the flue in the kitchen. I kept a fire in there last night for my potted plants" (73). This suggests that it was an accident, but maybe there's another explanation...

I think, as she said, that it was just an accident.
Unless it was a conspiracy from the "foot washing" baptists...

Who knows. I don't know. But now i am curious... She even said she didn't care.....and that she didnt like her house anyways. At least i think that is what she said...

Yes, she said that the house was too big for her anyway.

It does seem suspicious...

What makes you think there is another possible cause. She was worried about her plants freezing so she left a fire unaddended to keep them warm which started the fire.

So if it was Miss Maudie, what motives would she have?

the only motive Miss Maudie could possibly have is that she doesn't like her house. And I doubt she would burn it down because she would have to pay to rebuild her house. The fire was just an accident.

Didn't the kids say she loved her house and then they were suprised when she said she didn't after the fire?

I'm sure she was just trying to make light of her situation so the kids wouldn't feel bad for her. If someone purposefully started the fire I don't think it was Miss Maudie

The fire was an accident stop thinking that there is some conspiracy behind the fire.

Miss Maudie was probably really devastated, but she has a real growth mindset about things so she looks forward to the challenge of building another house.

lonely wolf, you've made your point clear. I do think it was an accident, but there are some seriously messed up people in this town. Random events do happen in books, but it's always good to consider all the possibilities.

It could be someone that really didn't like her.

i agree with you sokoudjou
she is relieving the children. and i also believe she is relieving herself, i dont think anyone would not care if there house got caught on fire, she cares, i think she just doesnt want everyone else to know she does.
and i am thinking someone could of started it too.
