Some believe that Maudie's flowers are an act of vanity.
"He that cometh in vanity departeth in darkness!"
If one really wanted to "worship" or "praise" God wouldn't they have appreciation for the beautiful world he created. To me Maudie seems more godly than the people who criticize her. In my opinion telling people their eternal destiny in a hostile way is not exactly "what Jesus would do" Maudie loves her flowers. She appreciates their beauty and they bring her joy. One must consider these things. In life, you must weigh what you personally beilive and what it the norm.

Ms. Maudie seems to be the one who has things right in this story. She almost seems to take pleasure out of contradicting the foot-washing baptists when they tell her she is going to hell. I wish I had her confidence!
Yes, I agree. Miss MAudie is living out what she believes through her actions, instead of empty words.
I like this woman!! She really does seem like the one person in the whole book who always knows what she is talking about.
YEAHH! i agreee with the_mountain_goat. she is the only one that knows what she is talking about, and i really like her. she is the only one with some sense about things going on.
Indeed! I concur.
Ok we get it everyone likes Ms. Maudie stop saying that you do.
Yeah, when those people came by and said those weird quotes "departeth in darnkess" or however it goes... it really confused me.
She is Freakin awesome
your telling me that they told her that she was going to hell because of her flowers then?
Yes. Remember, the f.w.b.s don't believe in pleasures outside of the bible.
yea i really have liked her personality and mentality since the beginning of the book, she really keeps her mind on what she believes, and seems to really ahve her head on right! and yea i agree with how people will just tell you your "eternity" in such a way where they seem like they aren't trying to help they are jsut trying to act better than you, or like your just dumb. so i agree with that is not what jesus would do
Oh okay. I kind of get it know. Thanks!
Yes, they think that. They believe, as a religous group, that your only interest should be singularly upon God and the bible. Yet, they fail to notice that in enjoying the wonders God has created for them, they are being with God. The earth is our playground, and enjoying what has been given to us is no sin at all.
and i forgot to say, but i really disagree with the no pleasures outside the Bible. life may be hell for those that are going to heaven, but that doesn't mean your suppose to make this life on earth terrible and miserable and unfulfilled.
