Tomboy

Why does Scout's aunt insist that the turn into a lady? It really is not terrible that Scout behaves like a boy. She has lived with men her whole life. She does not have a mother image in her life to look up to. She does know how a girl should act or dress. I think Scout's aunt should realize this and realize that Scout is too old now to try to change. She needs to let Scout be herself.

I don't think Scout is too old to change because as she becomes a teenager she will, but Aunt Alexandra really should lighten up on her.

Maybe Aunt Alexandra is trying to compensate for something she regrets in the past by trying to make Scout act like a lady.

Techniquely the mothering figure that was in her life was Calpurnia even though Scout did not listen to her much. But ya i agree her aunt should step out of the picture because Scout needs to be who she wants to be and eventually she will turn more lady like on her own.

I agree with bookworm.
I think that it isn't to late to change. But if Scout wants to be the way she is, then her Aunt Alexandera shouldn't be forcing her to be something else.

I agree with bookworm. Aunt
Alexandra really has no right to come in and invade their lives and the way that Atticus chooses to raise them. I'm sure he won't let them grow up to be hoodlems. ha

True Calpurnia is her mother image but she was African American so i do not think Scout ever thought about looking up to her.

i think shes just trying to look out for scouts future because she wants her to become something when shes older. also she might want her to have a family and children and alexandra thinks that you cant have that when you like like a boy. but i disagree with her. she can look like anything she wants, a tomboy or a pretty little girl

Scout does look up to Calpurnia some but as i said she tends to ignore Cal alot.

At the time it was just proper for Scout to act like a young lady. That's the way society worked. Also, its not to late for her to change, she is only around 9,as we discussed in an earlier post.

yea this really bothers me. Scout is very smart for her age and is honestly a well structured human being. yea she may be a little rough and all that, but honestly she has beenr aised well, and she has beenr raised to accept everyone for who they are, and now when she is thinking she is well structured she is getting told she should be more like a girl. her aun is jsut being stereotypical and is really bothering me. girls shouldn't be told what to wear, you are a human being and can decide what you should wear, and have your own choice to be an individual

It is not too late for Scout to grow up. She should have fun while she still can. She should play hard and hang with the boys as much as she still can. I mean i was just like Scout not caring about whether i wear pants or skirts. I was the girl playing football with the boys. And as a mother figure, Calpurnia is doing a good job to raise her as a woman. She has changed a little bit since Jem started growing up. All in all Scout should just be herself for now. There is plenty timefor that growing up stuff...ha

you know though i do think aunt alexandra is rushing her to much, but in this book i think this is actually a positive and key part jsut covered up in a negative way, i think she is expressing one of the main themes of the book of the coming of age. so i think she is rushing and being pushy, btu she is showing scout that soon she needs to start growing up. she doesn't need to stop having fun, and i do think she should be able to dress how she wants, but she needs to mature, jsut her aunt thinks clothes make her amture not attitude
