What is going on here with atticus? all of a sudden he could shoot. In the story it says that atticus hates guns. but why is it that the officer rely on him to shoot the dog? and how could he do it so perfectly? and why wouldn't he tell his kids about it? and why would he stop?
so many questions.

Maybe something bad happened that made him want to stop. (totally probable) Or maybe he is running from the law. (totally not)
Well, maybe his shooting abality isn't somethimg that Atticus cares about, he would rather his children learn different lessons from him
Well i think that he didnt tell his kid about how he could shoot a gun because it wasn't important. He probably has a lot of talents whithin him he just doesn't want to reveal them unless he needs to. For instance, Atticus shooting the dog.
i think he had a bad mad experience with guns and doesn't want to deal with them anymore in his life...but i do think princess could be right because he does tell scout not to fight alot.
Atticus is just a really good shot and everyone in town knows it however he wanted to keep it a secret from his children because he knows there is nothing to be proud of killing someone.
Maybe he wants to raise them to be peaceful, law-abiding citizens.
sure.. but how many men don't want to brag about their "skills"? especially when other men have complimented them on it. Not a common thing. But then again he is older.. and it was back in da' day.

Atticus doesnt want fame for being able to shoot a gun better than anyone. He does not believe it is something to be proud of no matter what everyone says. Atticus is a unique man he is very respectful and humble.
Maybe he just feels that guns are bad for anyone around and has this feeling of guilt. I do believe that he probably had a bad experiance with them so he feels bad about them.
i agree with wings4wilson something bad probably did happen and hes just trying to protect or not tell his family for something. i dont know why he wouldnt tell them because he seems pretty stright forward to me with his kids
If he doesn't want to shoot why did get his kids guns for Christmas? That's what I'm wondering. I think that like it said in the book, he had a natural ability, it wasn't anything he'd worked for, he didn't find it not worthy. I too think he had a bad experience with guns.

i agree with you let-the-sun-shine. i dont understand why he would get his kids guns. i mean either way, if he didnt like them then why would he of, and if he had a bad experience and thought they were not good to have around. i still dont undertand why he would want them to have one. it just doesnt make sense. hmm
