The Right to a Fair Trial and a Jury of Your Peers

Does anyone else think that the result of the trial had something to do with the fact that there were Cunninghams on the jury? It's like Jem said, "Can't any Christain judges an' lawyers make up for heathen juries..." It just doesn't seem like Tom was set up for a fair trial.

That is pretty unfair to have the prosecutors family on the jury. It should be a mix of different people.

That and the fact that people in that town were very prejudiced might have something to do with it.

OH. i didn't know that the Ewells were on the jury. No wonder they all said he was guilty...

The prejudice was the bigger part of it. Just like Atticus says a black man on trial against a white man no matter what the crime is or the facts the white man will win every time.'

Well of course it was unfair. The whole reason that tom was even on trial was that he was black and Mayella was white. It would have looked awfully bad for Mayella to have sid what actually happened. They wanted to convict a black man to make themselves feel better for being racist.

Exactly.

yeah it's very unfair

Blacks were never set up for a fair trial back then and still aren't. It is life and it is always unfair. I doubt life will ever be fair for anyone who is "different."

The only reason life isnt fair is because we make it that way.

yeah, Tom is definetely not guilty.

No, it will never be fair. People, good willing people, try to make it fair, but it is simply impossible. The only thing we can do is to try and make things equal and fair for the most part. We can try and make everyone feel some way about something, but we are human. And this is what happens in the book.

everyone knows that Tom is not guilty, but they go against what they know is fact just because he is black. Tom was never going to be found Innocent. Tom gave them the truth and they all knew by then that Mayella was guilty. sadly they didn't listen to their own minds and listened to the minds of other. They let others influence their ideas and actions.

Everyone needs to make an effort to make the world fair. If everyone does something fair then it will make the world that much better.

Fact of Life: The world will never be a place of peace and equality. That should be a law of nature because we all know it will never happen. Where there is one justice, there is always another injustice to follow it.

Yea... I'm not saying that we can't make the world fair at all, just that we should expect these kinds of things all the time because it is impossible to force someone to have completley fair and equal thoughts. Even I am biased, everyone is, to some extent, and that is exactly why this is not a suprise to me.

Lonelywolf10 said...

hmm thats right sad and depressing but true

Lonelywolf10 said...

But wait if alot of people made the effort then it would make the world much more fair not perfect but fair.

Auquamarine~ said...

Yea I know. I wish it could be different. But the more you watch for it, the better you can make things. Sticking one's head in the sand will not improve our world. Yet, looking for the injustice and attepmting to prevent it from happening can keep the world in a better state of peace.

Everyone has their own idea of something and they stand up for it if someone trys to bash it. Everyone is intitled to their own thoughts and that is why we will never have world peace or equality.

Auquamarine~ said...

Yes, that is exactly how I feel lonelywolf. We can only improve from here.

Another solution to explain what i said earlier if you yourself shows fairness to everyone then you become part of the solution not the problem. And the more people who does this the better everything becomes.

The question is: Where do we start?

Lonelywolf10 said...

Answer: start with yourself like at school

I wander how hard it would be to make a club about it and try and change the world? One little club could grow into a world wide foundation to help people.

True. Set an example of how you should act, not how others act around you. Be nice to the one kid that everyone laughs at because doesn't smell the best or something like that. Make polite conversation with the person who normally doesn't talk. You might be suprised what they have to say. And by doing this, treating everyone with that same common courtesy, things will, indeed, improve.

Interesting idea. And that is how some world organizations started out as. hmm interesting
