It is a bit strange to me as well. I've always seen it as a sign of respect to call your respective parent 'mother' or 'father'. I can't really think of a reason why they would want to call him by his first name. Maybe they have more of a friendly relationship with him as opposed to a child-parent relationship.
I dont find it strange at all. They call him by his first name because they respect him. Thats the only reason they call him that is respect.
But isn't it common to use mother and father as a sign of respect? Most people would find it rude to call an adult by his or her first name.
It seems that they don't have a normal parent-child relationship. Maybe that they call him Atticus signifies that their relationship is unique. Also, it could mean that Atticus isn't much of a father figure in their lives.
maybe because that was how they were broght up in the south. that could mean they have respect for their parents
It doesn't seem strange to me. I catch my younger brother calling my parents by their first names all the time. I even do it too sometimes.
Maybe not having a mother has something to do with it. I agree that they do not have a normal father/child relationship. I mean, he treats his children as almost peers, even reading to them from the financial section of the newspaper.
I don't think it has anything to do with respect...some kids just call their parents by their first name. For example if any of you have seen that 70's show? Eric calls his father by his first name, Red. (i loove that show)
I don't really see how its southern to call your parents by their first names. It seems more Southern to call people ma'am and such like. I see what you mean about it being respectful, Duck Lips, but its more respectful to call them by their titles.
to me . i dont think they care about respect at all. they just see him as a friend ..... and like princess said he is not a father figure.
